I am installing tile in a new shower, size is 48X8". My questions is, can I put the mortar on the tile first and rake it, as long as I back butter the wall the same way I would the tile If I raked the wall? If not can anyone explain the reason why?

In my experience it's best to put the adhesive on the wall. It's quicker and less messy too.
In this way it's easier to get a consistent depth of adhesive. Buttering each individual tile risks also not getting sufficient adhesive on the edges, or too much, a problem if the grout is going to be coloured, as you'll have to remove surplus adesive if it squeezes up between a couple of tiles.
