Replacements for carport pipes

I have an old pipe carport I plan to set up, but I do not have all of the straight pipes. I was planning on hewing some cedar post to size and using them in place of the missing poles with wood screws to secure them where the pins should be, but I am not sure about the longevity and durability of cedar. I am also on a tight budget, so any cheap repair advice is welcome.
