I'm trying to replace a pull cord switch in my bathroom. It is a 1970s UK building and it has two red wires, two black and two bare wires. Is it correct that the bare ones are attached to earth, the black ones are insulated and the red ones go to Com and S1/S2?

I tried this and it doesn't work. Any advice would be appreciated

Thanks

Hi.
It sounds like you may have removed a double pole switch, and are trying to replace with a two way switch.
What is this switching, and how was it wired before ? Does the old switch have three, or four terminals ?

If the old switch has four. it will be switching both line and neutral, that would explain the blacks. Bare wires should be sleeved green/yellow and, yes, in the earth terminal.
