electric cables through joists

Hi - I want to sister a number of joists - problem is there are electric cables (lighting I think) running through drilled holes in the joists which prevent me from positioning the new joists - is it possible to cut these and then reconnect through the new sister joists?
what type of connector would I need to use or can I just splice them?
