Can i move a cooker plug!

I'm having my little cooker taken out and a big range cooker installed, the trouble is the electric plug socket with the cooker switch will be immediately above a gas ring!! Can this socket just be moved along about 6 inches if I just chip the wall out and reposition it, behind the socket is there just one big wire which I can just moved along!
