Boosting Tumble Dryer Venting with an inline extractor fan

I have a tumble dryer sited in a basement approx 4m from an outside wall and 2m below the level of the external vent. It works OK but not as well as when it is sited on the ground floor next to an outside wall as God intended.

I have seen 4 inch and 6 in inline extractor fans that I thought I might use to effectively boost the extraction of water vapour from the tumble dryer.

I'd like to figure some way to automatically start and stop the inline extractor fan with the starting and stopping of the tumble dryer itself. I was thinking of some sort of current sensing device on the tumble dryer mains connection which then turned on the fan via some slave circuit. Is such a device readily avaialble?

Could I just put a mains relay in series with the tumble dryer or is that mad?

Thanks in advance.
